Today 15 May marks the celebration of International Day of Families, a day dedicated to celebrating the pivotal role families play in shaping the social fabric of society. Initiated by The United Nations 30 years ago, International Day of Families remains very relevant in today’s financial climate to raise awareness and mitigate issues faced by families in need worldwide.
At The One Box, we take pride in helping families access high-quality, fresh produce. Our latest research report highlights the program’s ability to link families with community support and services and how important this is. Families who previously never visited the school grounds now do so to pick up their weekly produce box. This provides opportunities to involve them in the school community and extend their support network.
Increased interactions have also helped coordinators refer families to access support with paying their utilities, learning English or in some cases identifying serious issues such as domestic violence and acting accordingly. Parents receiving The One Box also noted the benefits of the weekly nature of the program assisting with creating connections with their school and community and finding comfort in the regular interaction with other adults.
Through improving family and financial wellbeing and creating community connections, our recipient families find it easier to get back on their feet, with some even voluntarily retiring from program.
