As a part of our national fresh food relief program, The One Box provides fresh fruit, vegies, and wholemeal bread to almost 90 families in need across 5 Bendigo primary schools. However, with limited funding, The One Box and local schools need your support to continue assisting families experiencing hardship.
The One Box’s Impact
Rallying on behalf of the schools, Kerryn Phillips (Head of Student Wellbeing & Family Support) at California Gully P.S and Quarry Hill P.S. highlights the lack of fresh food relief alternatives in the region.“By partnering with The One Box, schools receive pre-packed fresh produce boxes that they can easily distribute to families impacted by food insecurity,” says Kerryn.
Being able to access fresh, nutritious food each week of the school year has significantly improved the physical and mental health of these families, whilst allowing them to funnel resources into rent and medical bills. Such reassurance allows recipients to pursue avenues to get back on their feet, making them financially resilient over time.
Independent research by Monash Business School validates that the consistency of the program not only positively influences students’ attendance and academic outcomes but also results in regular interactions between recipients and staff. Such weekly interactions create a sense of trust and confidence in families and encourage them to be more involved in school activities. St Peter’s Primary School Wellbeing Co-principal Jeremy Darmody said, “Our school attendance is up on a Friday because parents know they’ll be receiving The One Box.”

“We have to realise that food poverty is increasing,” Kerryn stresses. As more families struggle to afford high-quality, fresh food due to inflation, it’s imperative for businesses and community organisations to work together to scale fresh food relief in Australia.
With a funding gap of $45,000 required to provide relief next year, your contribution is crucial for helping families navigate rising living costs and foster a culture of compassion and hope in our community. Discover how you can get involved, and contact us to make a meaningful difference today.
