“Effective solutions should empower individuals and communities, not just meet immediate needs.”
Sharon Landy, The Highland Foundation
Fresh food meets an immediate need. Turning that support into lasting change takes consistency, and that’s what sits behind the partnership between The Highland Foundation and The One Box.
Established in 2020, The Highland Foundation partners with organisations working to improve people’s lives in lasting ways, backing initiatives that go beyond immediate relief to create meaningful, long-term impact. Its support of The One Box reflects that approach; with multi-year funding committed through to 2029.
From Food Support to Greater Stability
The One Box model is deliberately simple. Fresh, nutritious food is provided consistently through trusted school and community networks, helping families experiencing hardship manage one of their most immediate household pressures.
When fresh food arrives every week, families have one less expense to plan around, and more room in a tight budget for housing, education or bills. Regular contact with school wellbeing teams can also open the door to broader support services families weren’t accessing before.
Over time, that consistency is what can shift a household from uncertainty towards greater stability.
Why The Highland Foundation Chose The One Box
Practical support, dignity, strong local connections and the potential for lasting impact – that combination is what drew The Highland Foundation to The One Box.
We spoke with Sharon Landy from The Highland Foundation about what drew the Foundation to The One Box, what has made the partnership meaningful and what she hopes it can achieve in the years ahead.
What resonated with the Highland Foundation about The One Box’s mission and approach to addressing food insecurity?
We were very impressed with The One Box’s practical, dignified, and community-centred response to food insecurity. Rather than offering short-term relief alone, The One Box addresses a critical gap by providing consistent access to nutritious food for people facing prolonged hardship. Its focus on simplicity and respect for recipients aligns strongly with our belief that effective solutions should empower individuals and communities, not just meet immediate needs.
How does supporting The One Box reflect the Foundation’s approach to creating long-term impact?
By investing in an organisation that combines efficient delivery with strong local partnerships, The One Box helps to reduce ongoing food stress and its flow-on effects on health, education, and wellbeing. This approach aligns with our focus on supporting organisations that demonstrate clear outcomes, adaptability, and the potential for lasting systemic impact.
What aspects of your partnership with The One Box have been most meaningful, and what are you most excited to see over the next five years?
The most meaningful aspect of our partnership has been witnessing the tangible difference The One Box makes in people’s daily lives, supported by its genuine commitment to those it serves. We value the collaborative relationship and shared focus on impact. Looking ahead, we are excited to see The One Box expand its reach, deepen its community partnerships, and continue to innovate its model so it can support more individuals and families while maintaining the quality and dignity at the heart of its mission.
Backing Change for the Long Term
The Highland Foundation’s commitment through to 2029 represents something particularly valuable in community partnerships – the ability to think beyond the immediate need.
Multi-year support creates greater certainty. It gives community organisations the confidence to plan ahead, strengthen local partnerships and keep improving how support reaches the people who need it.
For families, that consistency shows up in smaller, more personal ways: fresh food arriving on the same day each week, a bit more room in the budget, a familiar face at the school wellbeing hub they’ve come to trust. These changes may begin with something as practical as a box of fresh food, but their effects can reach much further.
The partnership between The Highland Foundation and The One Box reflects a shared belief – lasting change is built through consistency, trust and giving people the opportunity to move forward.
