Each year, May 15 marks International Day of Families, a day dedicated to recognising the importance of families and the policies that support their wellbeing. This year’s theme, ‘family-oriented policies for sustainable development,’ highlights the crucial role that supportive policies play in helping families thrive, particularly when it comes to food security, health, and economic stability.
Creating Lasting Change with The One Box
At The One Box, we get to see firsthand how family-oriented initiatives can drive lasting change. Access to fresh, nutritious food is a fundamental part of any family’s wellbeing, yet for many, financial constraints make this a daily challenge. Independent research conducted by Monash Business School shows that consistent access to healthy food doesn’t just improve physical health – it boosts mental wellbeing and strengthens social connections. When families have access to nutritious meals, they experience reduced stress, improved quality of life, and a stronger sense of stability.
Sustainable Solutions for Sustainable Futures
Sustainable development means creating solutions that support families in the long term. The One Box works toward this by providing weekly boxes of fresh fruit, vegetables and bread to families facing food insecurity. By collaborating with schools, charities, and community organisations, we help ensure that families – regardless of their circumstances – have access to the nutrition they need.
Family-oriented policies go beyond just food insecurity, too. They also include support for parental leave, children, education and healthcare – all of which contribute to a fairer, more sustainable society. When families are supported, communities grow stronger, and future generations have the foundation they need to succeed.
As we recognise International Day of Families, it is important we continue advocating for policies and programs that prioritise family wellbeing. Sustainable development starts at home, and by working together, we can build a future where all families have the resources they need to not just survive, but thrive.
