World Food Day (Monday 16 October) and Anti-Poverty Week (15-21 October) is an important time for conversations about the growing food insecurity in Australia. As the cost of living crisis deepens, many families have no option but to purchase cheap processed food with little nutritional value in a bid to cut costs, negatively impacting their health.
Independent research by Monash Business School links consistent, reliable fresh food relief with fundamental benefits beyond financial or nutritional benefits: building community connection and trust, inclusion and dignity, and greater family wellbeing. The One Box allows families to send children to school with fruit and nutritious lunches, positively influencing participation in school activities and social and emotional wellbeing whilst reducing some of the stress of affording fresh food from their parents or caretakers.
Program Impact
“I think the children felt a bit left out. It was like all the other kids had fruit; I don’t have fruit. My parents can’t afford fruit. So, these children always felt a little bit uncomfortable at fruit break time, whereas now, having that fruit available to them, they are just one of the crew. It’s that inclusivity. They feel like they belong.”

“We are really grateful for the support of The One Box program. My kids have tried some fruit they have never tasted before. Thank you.”
– Beneficiary
“In a lucky country like Australia, it’s sad that so many families can’t afford to put fresh and nutritious food on the table. Given the cost of living that’s impacting everyone, it’s important that The One Box continues to provide for those struggling.”
